Getting To Aegina

Aegina is the largest of the Saronic Islands and is very close to the mainland. It can only be reached by sea as there is no island airport.

For my first trip to Aegina at the end of April 2023, my travelling companion was my Hydra friend Wendy and her car.

We sailed on the Saronic Ferries' ΑΧΑΙΟΣ car ferry from Gate E9 at Piraeus to Aegina Town. Our tickets cost €12 each and the car cost €29 one way. We booked directly online (in English the ferry is ACHAEOS) and collected our tickets from the kiosk on the port opposite the loading ramp of the ferry. Mindful of my wanting to take arrival photos we found seats on the open top deck, a perfect vantage point.

The Piraeus to Aegina Harbour route is the most popular but you can also reach Agia Marina on the east coast of Aegina from Piraeus which, if that's where you're staying, cuts out the 30 minute coach transfer across the island. And there are also routes directly to Souvala. Some routes are direct and quick, others stop at other islands along the way.

There are four car/passenger ferry companies that service Aegina as well as two passenger-only and much quicker dolphin/cat hydrofoils.

During high season (June – September) there are 573 scheduled crossings between Piraeus and Aegina, per week. During low season (October – May) however, there are 209 crossing per week.

The best site to use to plan your travel itinerary is Ferryscanner because it shows all the carriers and times in one convenient place and doesn't inflate the price. Book online, check in online and you can download your tickets to your phone. If like me you prefer the real thing, arrive at your departure gate (E9 for traditional ferries or E8 if you're travelling with Blue Star/Hellenic Seaways hydrofoil) 30 mins early to collect your ticket from the kiosks on the harbour - you will need your booking reference number with you. Your ferry/hydrofoil leaves from the mooring directly opposite the kiosks.
